MCD councillors numbering over 150 and other leaders rode on bullock carts to the Assembly this morning to protest against price rise but were stopped by police which had erected barricades on the Ring Road.

As the protesters were not allowed to go towards the Assembly, they entered into an argument with the police and started shouting slogans.According to police, the protesters turned violent as some of the activists tried to breach security and jump over the barricades, a charge denied by the BJP.

As the situation became uncontrollable, a senior police official said, they resorted to the use of water canons. Around ten BJP activists, including councillors, were injured.
Police also briefly detained around 300 protesters who were later released.Among the injured was MCD Standing Committee chairman Singhal who suffered a shoulder fracture. He was admitted to Bara Hindu Rao hospital.BJP Delhi chief O P Kohli, Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly V K Malhotra and BJP General Secretary Vijay Goel also took part in the protest.
