Hitting back at Narendra Modi, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi on Friday said the Gujarat chief minister and the BJP have no interest in poor and common people but a select few people in and outside the state.

At a rally in the tribal dominated area of Surat on Friday, Gandhi sought to refute the state government’s development claims by arguing that progress is nowhere to be seen and the BJP’s promises were false and a joke on the poor, the malnourished and people of lower castes. The Congess chief did not attack Modi directly.

Central funds

Instead, she targeted the state government. She said Central funds were not being utilised properly.

“It is for the people of this state to decide whether they want to believe in false promise makers or go with a party which has been loyal to its voters,” she added. She said the people of this state should not forget that this was the land of Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel who used to preach what they practiced.

Taking a dig at Modi, she said: “Now, there are people who give big advices but don’t follow them.”

Gandhi accused the BJP and the state government of large scale corruption and said the Centre had provided a lot of funds but their utilisation is nowhere to be seen. Making an emotional appeal, she told the people, “Congress and you have had a good relationship but the vested interest politics of the BJP have constantly tried to weaken this relationship. But I am glad you have negated all their efforts.”

She said it was high time that the tribal population of the state thought about bringing Congress back to power in the state.
