Addressing a press conference here Tuesday afternoon, BJP vice-president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said: "Prices of essential commodities have risen to unprecedented levels, largely on account of rampant corruption at various levels both in the state and the central governments."
The decision, he said, followed a meeting of all senior partymen at the BJP state headquarters here Monday.
He said the proposed street demonstrations from Jan 31 will be staged at "chowk, chaupal, chauraha" (crossings in cities, village centres and crossroads).
Naqvi, however, said before undertaking the demonstrations across the country, they would hold another meeting of senior party functionaries Jan 23 and 24.
"All prominent functionaries and leaders of the party will lead demonstrations in their respective areas of influence , while workers would form a human wall in all state capitals including Lucknow."
Subsequently, a major demonstration was also being planned outside parliament Feb 25.
The Samajwadi Party Monday also announced state-wide demonstrations by party activists at all district headquarters Tuesday against rising prices and a spurt in crime in the state.
