Retired Supreme Court judge A K Ganguly’s refusal to quit from the West Bengal Human Rights Commission resurfaced in Parliament on Friday, with the BJP demanding that he should be removed from the post.
Justice Ganguly, who had come for praise for his verdict on 2G cases, was indicted by a Supreme Court panel for "unwelcome behaviour" and "conduct of sexual nature" against a law intern but the apex court did not take any action against him on the ground that he had since retired. He had allegedly made advances towards the intern in a hotel room in Delhi in December last year.
Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj, who raised the issue in the House, was of the view that the relation between "guardian and ward" was of trust and faith and any breach cannot be pardoned.
Despite the fact that the nation was shocked by the Delhi gang-rape, such incidents continue and as a deterrent, Swaraj said, Ganguly should not be allowed to go unpunished. She also referred to another case of disgraced Tehelka founder Tarun Tejpal molesting his employee.
"On ethical grounds, he should have resigned by now. But he is stubbornly sticking to his post. He should immediately resign or else he should be removed from his post," she said.
