The Bombay High Court stayed I-T department notices to six Tata Trusts.

The Bombay High Court on Thursday stayed Income Tax (I-T) department notices to six Tata Trusts to show cause why their registration, under Section 12A of the I-T Act, should not be cancelled.

Issuing the interim stay, a bench, comprising Justice M S Sanklecha and Justice S K Shinde, asked the I-T authorities to file a reply on their jurisdiction, in the first place, to issue such a show-cause notice.

Arguing for Tata Trusts, senior counsel Darius J Khambata submitted that the six Trusts had surrendered their tax registrations way back in 2015.

According to a statement issued by Tata Trusts: "The matter pertains only to registrations of the Trusts under the Income Tax Act. The Trusts continue to be registered with the charity commissioner for carrying out charitable activities. The matter will next be heard on June 15, 2018."
