Captain Sunil James, who was released from a Togo jail on Thursday, reached home in suburban Malad here on Friday afternoon. James, arrested on July 31 along with at least two other Indian sailors of a vessel "MT Ocean Centurion" near the west coast of Africa, was languishing in a Togo jail for the past five months.

After the news of James incarceration hogged limelight, sustained efforts by the Indian government and his family members secured the release of the trio early on Thursday. They took a flight from west Africa to New Delhi.

James flew down from New Delhi to Mumbai around 2 pm on Friday, his brother-in-law Rakesh Madappa said. He added that James first went to see the body of his only child, 11-month-old Vivaan, who passed away on December 2. The body was kept in a south Mumbai morgue.

The family had decided against conducting the child’s last rites till James was released. “Though we have not yet decided on the funeral, the tentative date is Saturday. It will be held in Malad. But, the final decision will be taken by Vivaan’s father,” Madappa told mediapersons. He fought back tears over the death of his only child. Vivaan died on December 2, days before his first birthday.
