After five farmers died in the Madhya Pradesh Police firing and eight others committed suicide during the strike in Maharashtra, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday said the government was sensitive to the issue.

He also assured the Centre was serious about addressing the crisis. “I am the son of a farmer. I had been the agriculture minister too. I am from a village. Let me promise you that the Centre and the state governments are trying to do everything possible,” Singh told reporters here.

“We have received some information. Some powers have tried to instigate (farmers). Investigations are on. Let’s wait for the report,” he added, without elaborating.

“The NDA government... BJP government would not do anything to shatter the confidence of the common man and farmers,” he said.
