Check milk adulteration: SC to Centre

The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the Centre and several states to spell out measures they had taken to check adulteration of milk, calling it a “very-very serious” issue.

A bench of Justices K S Radhakrishnan and Pinaki Chandra Ghose observed that milk adulteration continues to occur in many parts of the country.

“This is happening all over the country. It is very very serious matter. What actions have you taken in the matter,” the court asked, while hearing a PIL filed by Swami Achyutanand Tirth and seven others alleging that the sale and supply of adulterated milk and its by-products is posing serious health hazard to the people.

The court directed states like Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand to file their responses within three weeks.

It fixed the matter for hearing on July 31. The petitioners had also urged the court to issue direction to frame a comprehensive policy with regard to production, sale and supply of healthy, hygienic and natural milk for the citizens.
