The much awaited Metro Rail services in Tamil Nadu capital is expected to start in first week of July.
Chennai Metro Rail Chief General Manager (operations) T Archunan said on Tuesday that the first phase will run from Koyambedu to Alandur in the city.
Stating that Chennai Metro has introduced ballast-less tracks for the first time in India, the official said all the underground services were constructed before laying the track.
“The soil was tested and the quality (of soil) was improved. The major reason for this is to have a maintenance-free track and to have a clean environment,” he claimed.
According to the official, the Koyambedu main depot has main structures like administrative building, rolling stock shed, stabling shed, infrastructure shed, general store, canteen and auxiliary sub-stations.
The Metro officials started sending documents to the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety in January. Accordingly, truck loads of paper containing drawings, designs and other details were sent to Bengaluru.
After that the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) S K Mittal, who conducted the first inspection in March 2015, when he checked the trains. The second part of the safety audit inspection was held for two days, from 20 April when he checked Koyambedu, Arumbakkam, Vadapalani and Ashok Nagar stations, besides tracks, operations control centre.
