Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan may keep his chair despite the Congress gunning for his head by levelling allegations of corruption in recruitments for government jobs.

The Congress has stepped up its attack on Chouhan, who was once seen as a “softer” alternative to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of altering the Public Service Commission rules to appoint his niece Ritu Chouhan as deputy collector in Bhopal.

“There is no question of it,” Home Minister and BJP president Rajnath Singh told reporters when asked whether there was any possibility of Chouhan being replaced.

Leader of the Opposition in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly, Satyadev Katare is spearheading the attack against Chouhan by making fresh claims of alleged wrongdoings in appointment to government jobs.

Chouhan has admitted in the state Assembly that about 1,000 appointments under the Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board were dubious, and were a blot on his tenure.

He has also ordered a probe by a special task force, which arrested several people.
