Christian community activists on Monday appealed to the chief minister of Maharashtra to take legal action against one Sameer Suri who posted an “abusive” comment on a social networking site on a photograph of Mother Mary and Jesus.
Talking to Deccan Herald, Catholic Secular Forum general secretary Joseph Dias said: “We will be meeting the chief minister and the home minister tomorrow. The issue is quite serious because he, instead of apologising in his response, just shrugged it off with four-letter expletives.”
According to Dias, if the government fails to take legal action along with an unconditional apology, “then the community will be forced to take to the streets.”
Meanwhile, in a separate incident in Pune, an ex-Shiv Sena corporator Tanaji Lonkar tendered an apology for bringing out a 2013 calendar depicting Jesus with a lit cigarette in one hand and a beer can in another.
The picture displayed for December 2013, as per the complaint filed by community based activists, “were distributed to the residents of Kondhawa.” Lonkar later told the complainant that he withdrew calendars after he was notified.
