The Jammu and Kashmir police on Saturday evacuated around 150 civilians living in avalanche-prone Waltengu Nad in south Kashmir Kulgam district.

“A police team shifted 150 civilians from Waltengu Nad to safe places,” a police spokesman said.

He said the team, comprising 30 policemen, was rushed to the area on Friday evening in view of the high danger avalanche warning issued by the authorities.

A devastating snow-storm had hit Waltengu Nad on February 17, 2005, killing nearly 200 people and rendering hundreds of others homeless.

Survivors of this remote Gujjar village near Qazigund, 85 km from here, still lament of inadequate relief and rehabilitation measures by the state administration.
