The party raised the issue after Muthalik was allegedly caught on camera taking money to vandalise an art exhibition. It also said Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa did not have courage to take action against Muthalik, as the BJP had come to power in the State with the help of people like him.

All India Congress Committee spokesman Shakeel Ahmed said the Sene should be banned not only in Karnataka but also in other states where it might have a presence.

Accusing Muthalik of fomenting communal tension for monetary benefits, Ahmed demanded stern action against those who spread hatred in the name of religion and indulge in the “business of riots.” A joint investigation by “Headlines Today” news channel and “Tehelka” magazine caught Sene leaders, including Muthalik, on camera negotiating money to stage-manage arson and vandalism. The Congress also criticised the BJP for trying to distance itself from the Sene after the expose.
