'Modi's silence on charges against Akbar unacceptable'

Congress on Sunday questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi's silence on the allegations of sexual transgressions against Union Minister M J Akbar.

"It is the moral duty of the Prime Minister to speak on the issue. On the one hand, the Prime Minister talks of saving the girl child and on the other he is conspicuous by his silence on allegations against his ministerial colleague," senior Congress leader Anand Sharma told reporters.

Sharma said the Prime Minister's silence on the issue was "unacceptable" and as head of the government, Modi should make his decision known.

Congress has demanded the resignation of Akbar, the Union Minister of State for External Affairs, who is facing allegations of sexual transgressions from a number of woman journalists he worked with in the past.

Akbar, who was on an official visit to African nations, returned to the national capital on Sunday and said that he would be issuing a statement on the allegations against him.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi had supported the #MeToo movement saying that truth needed to be told loud and clear to bring about change.
