The administration of a government school in Udaipur sacked its cook on Monday, following the allegations of caste-based discrimination made by a student of Class 8.
In a video that went viral on social media, a 14-year-old Dalit student at the Government Girls Upper Primary School in Utharda village in Salumbar in Udaipur said the cook reportedly threw away food touched by a girl student who belonged to a lower caste.
The student is heard saying in the video that the cook scolded her for touching the chapatis and told her on her face that she belongs to a lower caste and should not have touched the chapatis.
"She (cook) threw all the chapatis to dogs, just because I had touched them," the girl said in the video.
The incident dates back to July 2. The cook was sacked on Monday. The school administration also convened a meeting of the school management committee on Monday in which they decided to remove the cook.
The cook, who was a contractual employee, used to serve mid-day meals to the students in the school.
Sushil Arya, the principal of the school said, "The cook/helper Kamla Vaishnav apologised in a letter and later had also tendered her apology for discriminating against the girl. However, the locals were not pacified and wanted action against her. Therefore we took stern action and removed her".
"Incidentally both the student and the maid belong to the same village, which has annoyed the villager", the principal said.
