The woman was so upset that she even refused to heed the advice of her parents and decided to divorce her husband. According to reports, Sapna, a resident of Gosaiganj locality in Lucknow district, was married to one Rajesh about six months ago with much fanfare.

On the occasion of “Bhaiyadooj” (a Hindu festival) last month, Sapna had gone to her parents’ house to meet her brother.

When she returned to her in-laws’ home later in the evening, she came to know that her husband had cooked chicken. A strict Sapna was very upset with this and immediately left for her parents’ house again. Rajesh’s family tried to persuade her to stay but she did not relent. She made it clear to her parents that she cannot live with a person who eats non-vegetarian food. Although her parents counselled her not to take this extreme step and seek divorce, their words failed to have any effect on her. Sapna’s parents then approached the panchayat with the request. A panchayat of the elder members of the community in Rajesh’s village in Mohanlal Ganj was convened on Monday to consider the matter.

As Sapna remained adamant on leaving Rajesh, the panchayat, after much deliberations,  approved their separation. The panchayat also directed Rajesh to return the items given by the girl’s family in dowry during the marriage.

According to reports, Rajesh sought Sapna’s forgiveness and pleaded with her not to leave him for such a trivial reason.

He also assured her that he would never have non-vegetarian food again but she did not relent.
