Senior police officers have destroyed crucial evidence to shield their colleagues who have been accused of gang-raping a minor at Musajhag police station in Uttar Pradesh’s Budaun district.

A senior police official at the station is believed to have broken the lock outside the room of Veerpal, one of the alleged rapists, and removed liquor bottles and a condom before a forensics team could arrive on Friday.

According to sources, police station records pertaining to the time of entry and exit of the two accused constables were also tampered with to confuse investigators.

Sources said constables Veerpal and Avanish Yadav were allowed to leave the police station despite a case of rape being registered against them. The duo have been absconding since Thursday morning.

According to reports, the kin of the two constables had allegedly threatened the family of the victims with dire consequences if they did not withdraw their complaint.
