1,769 fresh Covid-19 cases, 30 deaths reported in Karnataka

Karnataka on Wednesday logged in 1,769 freshCovid-19 cases and 30 deaths, taking the total number of infections and fatalities to 29,11,727 and 36,680 respectively, said the Health Department. There were 24,305 active cases while the recovery of 1,714 patients took the total number cured to 28,50,717 so far.

UK to expand Covid-19 vaccination first doses to all over-16s

Britain's health service will expand itsCovid-19 vaccination programme to everyone aged 16 and over, from the current 18 and over, after formal scientific advice in favour of younger age cohorts on Wednesday.

The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) issued a formal recommendation to offer first doses to all those aged 16 and 17, with advice on second doses to be updated following further study of safety data.

The WHO on Wednesday called for a moratorium onCovid-19 vaccine booster shots until at least the end of September to address the drastic inequity in dose distribution between rich and poor nations.

World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called on the countries and companies controlling the supply of doses to change gear and ensure more vaccines to less wealthy states.

Over 95,000 people received Covid vaccine doses in a day in Delhi

The Delhi government on Wednesday said over 95,000 people have received anti-coronavirus vaccine doses the previous day with 45,314 of them getting the second jab.

A total of 1,02,95,389 vaccine doses have been administered in Delhi so far, according to the city's vaccination bulletin.

Of the total 1,02,95,389 jabs -- 75,33,335 were first doses and 27,62,054 second doses.

China seals city as its worst Covid outbreak in a year grows

China's worst coronavirus outbreak since the start of the pandemic a year and a half ago escalated Wednesday with dozens more cases around the country, the sealing-off of one city and the punishment of its local leaders.

Since that initial outbreak was tamed last year, China's people had lived virtually free of the virus, with extremely strict border controls and local distancing and quarantine measures stamping out scattered, small flareups when they occurred.

Covid-19: Mumbai gets its first genome sequencing lab

Mumbai's first genome sequencing laboratory at civic-run Nair Hospital will offer the city an added advantage in the battle against coronavirus as the new facility can analyse a large number of samples in a short period and also identify mutants, something that will be especially useful in hotspot areas, the hospital said on Wednesday.

The lab was inaugurated virtually by Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.

Bhubaneswar claims to be 100% vaccinated

The capital of Odisha, Bhubaneswar, has claimed to have achieved 100 per cent vaccination against Covid-19. The BMC jurisdiction, which tops the list of daily new infections as well as Covid-19 fatalities in the state, has administered as many as 18,77,178 doses of vaccines by August 2. While 10,71,676 people have received first dose of vaccine, 8,05,502 beneficiaries got the second dose, BMC officials said.
