Dubbing the country’s drought crises ‘unseen in the last 25 years’, the Communist Party of India has called for an all-party meet to discuss the situation.

The party has also announced    ‘Save farmers, Save water and Save livestock Day’ on May 5 and 6 to demand compensation for farmers severely hit by the weather anomaly.

Besides immediate supply of drinking water to the affected areas, the party has demanded drought pension of Rs 3000 a month and free food to farm workers.

CPI general secretary S Sudhakar Reddy alleged that the government is unable to make a serious plan to counter the extreme drought situation. He said the CPI would seek a ban on extracting water by private players from the drought-hit areas.

The senior leader suggested that the state and central governments must create small water bodies through MGNREGA, while also undertaking repairs to water tanks immediately, besides rainwater harvesting and other ways of conserving water.
