The relief and rescue operations that continued through the night were still going on with army personnel also joining hands with the civil administration in the exercise. The number of those injured has also jumped to around 250, officials said.
“Rescue workers were looking for possible survivors on the worst affected S-2 coach and an AC III coach although the chances of anybody being alive after so many hours appear to be very slim,” an official said. “Most deaths have been attributed to shock due to haemorrhage caused by multiple injuries,” Additional Director, Health, Dr. Asha Bhargav, told Deccan Herald.
While a majority of the injured have been undergoing treatment at District Hospital in Fatehpur, over 50 seriously injured have been shifted to Kanpur Medical College Hospital, Dr Bhargav said. She said the bodies would be transported to T B Sapru Hospital in Allahabad after post-mortem at District Hospital at Fatehpur.
Movement of trains on the busy Howrah-Delhi route, however, continued to be affected even 32 hours after the disaster. “It will take us another night to fully clear the tracks and restore movement,” said the officials.
The special train that arrived at Fatehpur from Howrah with the relatives of the Kalka Mail pasengers would be leaving for Howrah station in Kolkata on Tuesday afternoon, railway officilas said.
