The legacy of revered social reformer Sree Narayana Guru continued to steer political debate in Kerala on his 88th death  anniversary as leaders of prominent parties slammed efforts to politicise his vision.

Meanwhile, the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam reached out to potential allies ahead of its crucial move to form a political party, which could alter the state’s political equations with its clout among the Ezhavas.

CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan on Monday criticised attempts to communalise the reformer's teachings, in a veiled take on the SNDP’s reported proximity to the BJP and Sangh-affiliated outfits.

“There is an organised attempt to project the Guru as a Hindu god. The Guru had, in fact, defied all such efforts,” he said at an event organised here to mark the death anniversary.

Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala said attempts to use the Guru’s name to gain political mileage were deplorable.
