The Delhi High Court on Tuesday sought a response from Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on a fresh Rs 10 crore defamation suit filed by Union minister Arun Jaitley.

The high court joint registrar, Pankaj Gupta, issued the notice asking Kejriwal to respond before the next date of hearing on July 26 why defamation proceedings should not be initiated against him. A registrar has to settle procedures in a civil suit before it is taken up by the court for hearing.

Jaitley filed the second defamation case against Kejriwal after his lawyer Ram Jethmalani used objectionable words during a hearing before the joint registrar in an earlier defamation matter against the chief minister.

A day later, Justice Manmohan, who was hearing a connected matter, had termed as “scandalous” the remarks made by Jethmalani against Jaitley before the joint registrar during the cross-examination.
