Six weeks after the demise of industrialist Sunjay Kapur, his mother, Rani Kapur, has raised concerns over the “suspicious circumstances” surrounding his death in a letter addressed to the family-owned Sona Comstar and the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).
In the letter, she said that there is “more than what meets the eye.” Even hours before Sona Comstar AGM, Rani Kapur made shocking claims, alleging that she was "forced to sign documents behind locked doors" and "left at the mercy of a select few for survival."
In her request to defer the annual general meeting, Rani Kapur said: “As you know, on 12.06.2025, my son, Mr. Sunjay Kapur, tragically passed away under highly suspicious and unexplained circumstances in the UK. Despite repeated efforts, I have not received any clear answers or documentation about the incident. I remain dependent on media reports for information. While our family mourns, certain individuals appear to be attempting to usurp the family legacy.”
"Please also take note, I have been denied access to my accounts and have been left to the mercy of a select few for survival. All this, in less than a month of my only son passing away," said Mrs Kapur. She further said that she is the majority shareholder of the Group and alleged that she was forced to sign several documents without being given any explanation during her period of grief. She maintained that she has not given her consent to add anyone to the board of the Sona group of companies.
In the letter, Ms Kapur further claimed information from "well-wishers" had highlighted "gross illegalities" and left her "disturbed". "At this stage I do not wish to dilate any further on various gross illegalities... except to state, in no uncertain terms, that no decisions must be taken without my consent."
Following the sudden passing of Sunjay Kapur, Sona BLW Precision Forgings Ltd (Sona Comstar) appointed Jeffrey Mark Overly as the new chairman of the board. Priya Sachdev Kapur was also added to the board as a non-executive director.
Sunjay Kapur leaves behind his wife, Priya Sachdev Kapur, whom he married in 2017. Together, they have a son named Azarias, born in December 2018. From early marriage to actress Karisma Kapoor, he had two children – Samaira and Kiaan Raj Kapur. Sunjay Kapur died after reportedly swallowing a bee during a polo match in England on June 12, 2025.
