Derogatory remarks on FB spark violence

Angry over derogatory remarks about a particular religion on Facebook, a mob in Makrana block of Nagaur district on Wednesday set a police vehicle on fire and resorted to stone pelting while police resorted to canes and tear gas shells to quell the rioters. In all 45 people were injured, including 12 policemen.

The situation in the marble town remained tense but under control, police said. The district police ordered extra police force from nearby districts to restore order. Community leaders appealed for communal harmony and persuaded shopkeepers to open their shops in the evening.

Trouble started when news spread about the derogatory references on the social networking site. Anrgy mob took out a procession demanding death penalty for the culprits resulting in clashes. Police have arrested the Facebook account holder behind the derogatory post. “We have arrested the accused after tracking his Facebook account,” police said.
