Addressing a press conference in Bangalore on Friday, Naidu said the DMK had decided to remain outside the government on the day of the swearing-in ceremony of the new Cabinet. The party leaders had returned to their home-state skipping the swearing-in ceremony. “I don’t want to comment much on this development at this juncture. I can only say this signals the future developments,” he said.
Naidu said the UPA had a comfortable majority and that there should be no excuses to deliver effective governance this time. The first issue the government should focus on was the rehabilitation of the Tamil people in Sri Lanka.
“The end of the LTTE era is not the issue now. Tamilians should get proper shelter in the neighbouring country. The government should ensure that Tamilians get due representation in the government there,” he said.
The BJP’s performance in the Lok Sabha elections was historic. “We not only won 19 seats but stood number one in 141 assembly constituencies. It is all because of hard work by our workers and the developmental works taken up by the government led by Yeddyurappa,” he said.
Recalling his statement on the Third Front in the run-up to the polls, Venkaiah Naidu said: “I had said the Front was only a parking lot. Now it has proved true. As the results started flashing, many in the parking lot applied reverse gear to support the party in power. Now, the BJP has remained the main Opposition party. And it is committed to constructive Opposition.”
Naidu was happy that H T Sangliana and Manjunath Kunnur, former BJP MPs who contested on Congress ticket, were defeated.
