Depressed over marital discord, a 27-year-old woman pursuing post graduation from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) committed suicide by consuming poison at her hostel room in Hauz Khas, police said on Tuesday.
The deceased, identified as Kirti Gakhar, was pursuing her first year MD in pharmacology after clearing entrance examination last year. Gakhar was staying with a batch mate in the women’s hostel on the campus.
Gakhar, who hails from Bhiwani in Haryana, was alone on Monday night as her roommate had gone to her friend’s place. On Tuesday morning, a resident doctor went to the hostel to check up on her when he did not receive any response despite making several phone calls .
He went to her room along with a woman security guard.
“The room was locked from inside and when no one answered the door, the guard informed her senior, who, in turn informed the security control room,” said a senior police officer.
The guards broke open the door and found her lying unconscious. She was rushed to the casualty ward where she was declared brought dead.
“We found a suicide note in which she mentioned that no one was responsible for her extreme step. She also addressed a few lines to her parents seeking apology,” said the investigating officer.
Gakhar had got married to Avanish Gakhar, who is also pursuing post-graduation from a medical college in Assam, in 2010. After a few months, they developed differences and both of them filed for divorce. “She was depressed over this... a few more things are still a matter of investigation,” said the officer.
The body, after post-mortem, was handed over to the family. The investigators are questioning her friends and relatives and have also asked her husband to join the probe.
Doctors and teachers at AIIMS were shocked by the incident. They said Gakhar was a brilliant student and was doing well.
