In this procedure, each hair follicle is taken out individually, root by root, under anaesthesia by special microscopic instruments, Alka and A.K. Gupta explained.

The procedure is safe as no knife and stitches are used. It's painless and there's minimal bleeding.

The alternatives are non-surgical methods like wearing wigs, weaving, application of herbal oils or taking a course of homeopathic or allopathic medicines. But these have limited benefits.

On the other hand, the doctors claim, "transplanted hair do not fall as they come from permanent hair zone and they are resistant to hormonal effects. Normally 90 percent transplanted hair survive."

The procedure is suitable for those between 23 and 70 years of age.
Guptas said the new procedure has become a popular gold standard in hair restorative surgery world over.

The number of hair to be transplanted varies from 1,000 to 3,500, depending on the area affected by baldness.

The transplanted hair begin growing on their own after eight to 12 weeks.
