A 21-year-old girl engineering student died in Tirupur district of Tamil Nadu after she was brutally attacked in her classroom by a former male student of the same college, on Tuesday.

The police said that the accused Udayakumar entered the class with a wooden log at  10.20 am and attacked Sonali, a third year student, after a brief argument.

The lecturer, who was conducting the class, was also injured in the melee when he tried to save Sonali.

The victim was immediately taken to Karur hospital for first aid and later shifted to a private medical centre in Madurai for treatment. Doctors’ attempt to save Sonali went in vain as she did not respond to the treatment. She had sustained severe head injury in the attack.

Initial investigation revealed that Udayakumar, who was suspended from the college recently for poor attendance, was a friend of the victim. However, Sonali avoided talking to Udayakumar in recent days after action was taken against him by the college.
