The CBI on Tuesday held Rajat Majumdar, a former director-general of the West Bengal Armed Police and prominent TMC leader, for enabling the Saradha Group to expand business in its multi-crore scam.

A CBI spokesperson told reporters that the retired IPS officer was charged with conspiracy, cheating and misappropriation of funds. Earlier, the CBI had raided Majumdar’s house and summoned him three times for interrogation. After receiving inputs from other interrogations, the CBI called Majumdar for questioning once again on Tuesday.

The retired IPS officer was arrested around 6 pm after an intensive three-hour interrogation and will be produced before a designated court in Kolkata, sources said.

The former Saradha Group president was reportedly arrested after discrepancies emerged in his statements. Majumdar had, as security consultant of the Saradha group, bypassed legal procedures to take care of hurdles in the multi-crore scam.

He also acted as a bridge between influential persons and the group’s chairman-managing director, Sudipto Sen, who has been behind bars since April 2013 for duping lakhs of investors.

“Given his capacity as an IPS officer, he knew most top officials and bureaucrats,” a source said.
