The incident showed the security apparatus is "nalayak" (useless), he told reporters outside Parliament House.

A suspended police head constable had thrown a shoe at Omar during the Independence Day function in Srinagar yesterday following which 15 policemen including four officers were suspended.

Farooq Abdullah, at the same time, sought to take the incident in his stride, saying his son had joined an elite club.

"He has joined an elite club of former US President George Bush, Home Minister P Chidambaram, Pakistan President Asif Ali Zadari and a few others with the reward of shoe. It is a wonderful thing," he said.

Asked if the incident reflected the level of resentment in the state, he said, "We have to fight out the situation that exists. We can't run away."

He said Jammu and Kashmir was part of India and he did not support the calls for its separations from India. "Either you stay with us or sink with us," he said.
