Fill vacant posts with sacked workers: HC directs TN govt

Madras High Court on Tuesday directed the Tamil Nadu government to take the 13,000 public welfare workers appointed during the previous DMK regime in regular vacancies by October 31.

The verdict comes as a relief for the workers, who have been hired and fired by successive DMK and AIADMK governments since 1996.

The DMK government appointed the workers in 1996 to monitor implementation of various welfare schemes at the village level, but they lost their jobs when the rival AIADMK was voted to power in 2001 and subsequently re-hired when the DMK returned to power in 2006.
