Saying that “films are not made in a factory”, veteran filmmaker Shyam Benegal has come to the defence of Udta Punjab describing it an “important film”.
“It is an important film, it brings to the fore a very big problem,” said Benegal.
Benegal has been appointed by the government to head an expert committee to recommend broad guidelines for certification of films by the Censor Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
His comments came after a special screening of the forthcoming movie. “You cannot think that everything will fit in the same set of rules, films are not made in a factory.
Technically it is a very well-made film,” said the highly-respected filmmaker, who was awarded the Padma Shri in 1976, Padma Bhushan in 1991 and Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2005.
“I have a feeling a lot of controversy has started because everybody feels that it is blaming the state (Punjab). On the contrary the state is vulnerable,” he said.
