The blaze that gutted several floors of Mantralaya and claimed five lives besides destroying valuable official documents could have been averted if the state government had heeded the warnings of a technical team two years ago, a leading RTI activist has claimed.

In a letter to Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and leaders of the Opposition, activist Vihar Durve said that in April 2009, he had written to then Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, specifically intimating the dangers of an accidental fire in the Mantralaya.

“We also demand that you, along with Ashok Chavan and other officials, take the responsibility for the blaze that engulfed Mantralaya,” Durve said.

Continuing his attack, he asked why the government,, ,which clears files related to Adarsh apartments and RTI Amendment very early, takes so much of time in clearing files of ordinary people.
