Fire in aircraft at Kolkata airport, no casualties

Fire was spotted inside a Doha bound flight at Kolkata Airport while passengers were boarding the aircraft on the early hours of Thursday. There were no casualties in the incident.

The incident prompted the Air Traffic Control ( ATC) to declare "full emergency" at the Airport at 3 am.

The fire was spotted coming out of the Auxiliary Power Unit ( APU) of the aircraft by the pilot.

"On 28.02.2019, while boarding of Qatar Airways flight QR-541 CCU - DOH ( in Doha) was in progress, the pilot observed fire indication in APU. Full emergency was declared by ATC at 0300hrs ( 3 am) which was withdrawn at 0400hrs ( 4 am), " a Kolkata Airport official said.

The Aircraft was thoroughly checked and then the boarding resumed at 6.43 am.

"After the aircraft was checked and cleared boarding started again at 0643hrs. Meanwhile, tea and snacks were provided to passengers by Qatar. Flight departed at 0811 hrs ( 8.11 am)," the official said.
