A fresh tension has erupted between the activists of the ABVP and the Left-backed students unions in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) over the screening of a film in the campus on the contentious issue of ‘love jihad’ in Kerala.
The students owing allegiance to the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Left-backed unions clashed with each other in the university campus as the Left-leaning students disrupted the screening of the film In the Name of Love-Melancholy of God's Own Country on Friday evening.
One security guard of the university was injured during a Friday night brawl while he was trying to calm down the tempers. Several students suffered minor injuries.
The injured security guard was taken to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for treatment.
Former JNU Students Union president Mohit Pandey claimed that some 40-50 ABVP activists attacked him while he was alone after the students protested the screening of the film.
As many as nine complaints were filed by the students at a local police station against each other. "After disrupting the screening of the movie at Sabarmati dhaba, the left-wing protesters intentionally injured a guard," the ABVP charged in a statement.
Activists of the Left-backed unions rejected the charge, claiming that the security guard was injured by the ABVP activists who made “a murderous attempt” on Pandey following a protest against the screening of the film, which was organised on the JNU campus by the Global Indian Foundation and Vivekanand Vichar Manch with the ABVP support.
The police is yet to take any action on the complaints filed by the students.
