German to be taught in KVs

To this effect, Commissioner, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) Avinash Dikshit signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Germany’s Goethe-Institut, which was represented by its regional director Heiko Sievers here on Friday.

A large number of Kendriya Vidyalayas are already teaching German as third language into their school network as a part of the curriculum following a decision by the KVS.

The Goethe-Institut, which is also known as Max Muller Bhavan, will impart communicative German language training to the students of Kendriya Vidyalayas.

It will also provide training and support to teachers of KVs in implementing the German language project in the schools till they gradually become capable of handling the language education programme confidently.

Under the MoU, the German institute will help KVS in equipping its schools with materials to support the teaching of the German language.

A joint coordination committee will be set up which will have members both from the KVS and Goethe-Institut. The activities undertaken under the MoU will be reviewed at least once a year.

The MoU was signed in the presence of Minister of State for Human Resource Development E Ahamed and Minister of State, German Federal Foreign Office Cornelia Pieper.

The Goethe-Institut is the Federal Republic of Germany’s cultural institution operational worldwide. It promotes the study of German and encourage the international cultural exchange. It also fosters knowledge about Germany through giving cultural information.
