An incident of human trafficking came to light in Bharatpur district of Rajasthan after a minor girl alleged that her mother had sold her for Rs 1 lakh.

The girl from Agra in Uttar Pradesh managed to escape from her captor and approached the district police office in Bharatpur on Wednesday. Bharatpur SP Anshuman Bhumiya told Deccan Herald that senior police officers have been sent to Agra to inquire about the incident. The girl was handed over to the child welfare committee, who has kept her under the care of a local NGO.

The girl told the police that she was sold to a man named Lakhan, 30, about 10 months ago in Agra. She alleged that Lakhan and his relatives connived with her mother to sell her again to another man. They started torturing her after she objected. She was allegedly locked up in a room without food and water. She somehow managed to escape from their clutches and arrived at Bharatpur. The police said prima facie it appeared that her mother and Lakhan were involved in flesh trade. A police team has been sent to Agra to identify the culprits.
