Finance ministry officials on Thursday dismissed TV reports that Chief Economic Adviser (CEA) Arvind Subramanian has resigned.
The officials described the reports as “incorrect.” The reports in some news channels were in contrast to the buzz in the ministry that Subramanian may be given an extension, making his tenure co-terminus with the current term of the Modi government till 2019.
Subramanian was appointed the CEA on October 16, 2014 for a period of three years. His tenure was to end on October 16. This post was lying vacant since September 2013 after Raghuram Rajan took over as the governor of the Reserve Bank of India.
Subramanian is said to have briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the economic situation and remedies needed to rekindle growth a few days ago.
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has often praised Subramanian as the principal author of the annual Economic Surveys, where he had recommended big-ticket changes for boosting the economy.
