The Central government employees having two wives may have to declare it in their service books, if the proposed changes to the records come into effect.

The proposal to declare bigamy is part of the Department of Personnel and Training’s effort to modernise employees’ service book to make it user friendly. Ministries and departments are asked to give their views on the proposal by April 20.

The new proposal says employees should upload a declaration regarding bigamy –having two wives or husbands – in their service, with the existing rules saying employees should not enter into a relationship with another person while their spouse is living unless the central government permits them.

The new proposals also call for including Aadhaar number that would help government deliver pension on time, a senior official said.

Employees are required to give three photographs –one at the time of joining, two after 18 years of service and three 12 months before retirement.

The service book contains details of posting, qualifying service, house-building advance the employee had received, besides  central government health scheme, employees group insurance scheme and leave travel concession.
