The government will hold another round of consultation with stakeholders on the proposed policy for scrapping 20-year old commercial vehicles, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said on Monday.
Though the Ministry of Road Transport had sent the proposed policy to junk old vehicles for the Prime Minister Office's for approval, it was sent back asking the Ministry to hold another round consultation with stakeholders including transporters.
In May 2016, the Ministry had floated a draft Voluntary Vehicle Fleet Modernisation Programme (V-VMP) that proposed to take 28 million two-decade-old vehicles off the road. The proposal aims to a mandatory scrap of such vehicles from April 1, 2020 mainly aimed at cutting down the increasing vehicular pollution from old vehicles.
However, the PMO, which wanted the proposal should be optional instead of making mandatory, asked the Ministry to hold more consultations with various stakeholders for taking everybody on board before going held with the project.
