Government on Tuesday launched the “Suraksha Bandhan” enrolment drive that aims to create a social security scheme through gift cheques and special deposits. It announced the scheme last week.

“The ‘Suraksha Bandhan’ drive aims to take forward the Government’s objective of creating a universal social security system in the country, targeted especially at the poor and the under-privileged. Participating banks supported by the participating insurance companies are carrying out local outreach, awareness building and enrolment facilitation under the drive,” the finance ministry said in a statement. The Suraksha Bandhan drive –being launched to coincide with the Raksha Bandhan festival- seeks to encourage people to gift social security plans to their near ones.

It will be supported through the Jeevan Suraksha gift cheques to be made available for Rs 351 in bank branches to facilitate one year payment of premium for PMJJBY and PMSBY by the recipient.
