Scrapping its plan to privatise Chennai, Kolkata, Jaipur and Ahmedabad airports, government has said it would continue to involve private players in the airports’ operation and maintenance.

Officials revealed that a decision to this effect was taken at a high level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and attended by Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju and his deputy Mahesh Sharma.  This reverses the earlier plan to operate, manage and develop Chennai, Kolkata, Jaipur and Ahmedabad airports in Public Private Partnership mode.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) also issued Request for Qualification (RfQ) documents in December.

Sharma on Wednesday said the government would take up Jaipur and Ahmedabad airports on pilot basis for development.
