The Gujarat Assembly on Tuesday ratified the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Constitutional Amendment Bill passed by Indian Parliament earlier this month amid political drama.

With this, Gujarat becomes the sixth state in the country, after Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar and Chhattisgarh, to ratify the Bill that needs approval of at least 16 of the 29 states. The Lok Sabha had passed the Bill and Centre has set itself a deadline of April 1 next year for implementation of GST.

Before passage of the Bill, all Congress legislators in Gujarat Assembly, barring leader of opposition Shankarsinh Vaghela and Balwantsinh Rajput, were suspended for the day for ruckus over the Una incident where cow vigilante publicly flogged four Dalit youths on July 11.

Congress legislators demanded an enquiry into the incident by a sitting High Court judge, displaying banners in the House, rushing to the well and throwing bangles at treasury benches.
