In order to put up a united face, the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday named Dr Harsh Vardhan as chief ministerial candidate for Delhi Assembly elections, putting to rest intense leadership squabble that was spoiling party’s image.
BJP state president Vijay Goel, who was pitching himself for the top slot, was humbled by the party to accept his rival Dr Harsh Vardhan as the chief ministerial nominee at a hurriedly convened central parliamentary board meeting on Wednesday morning.
BJP president Rajnath Singh announced at a press conference that 58-year-old ENT specialist Vardhan was “unanimously” chosen by the parliamentary board as the chief minister candidate.
Goel was the last to walk up to a stage inside the conference hall where BJP top brass including L K Advani, Sushma Swaraj, Nitin Gadkari and Arun Jaitley were seated for the announcement. He was initially hesitant but eventually sat next to Vardhan on the podium after much cajoling.
Rajnath Singh said that he had spoken to Goel on Tuesday and even he had accepted that Vardhan should be projected as the chief ministerial candidate.
