Apparently apprehensive over comparatively low voting percentage in the first three phases of polling in Uttar Pradesh, prime minister Narendra Modi on Friday appealed to the people to take part in the electoral process in large numbers.
In an informal chat with reporters after filing his nomination papers in Varanasi, Modi cautioned the people against falling in the ''trap'' laid by some people that there was no need to vote as he (Modi) was winning the polls.
''Some people are trying to create an atmosphere that no harm will be done even if the people do not vote as he is winning the elections,'' he said.
''Voting is your (people) right...take part in the electoral process in large numbers,'' the prime minister added.
Earlier addressing party's booth level workers in Varanasi also, Modi asked them to ensure that people reached the polling booths to cast their votes.
He also presented his report card on the developmental works undertaken in Varanasi during the past five years and said that the temple town had changed drastically during the period.
The polling percentage in the first three phases of polling in the stage has caused concern in all the parties though everyone is interpreting it as per his own affiliations.
Around 63.69 per cent electorate exercised their franchise in the first phase of polling on eight seats in western UP region. The second and the third phase of polling witnessed a turnout of 62 and 61 per cent respectively.
