The Madras High Court on Friday directed the Tamil Nadu government to file a detailed response by June 6 on what led to the police firing during anti-Sterlite protests in Thoothukudi (Tuticorin) on May 22.
The order by the Madurai bench of the high court came while hearing a petition demanding the filing of murder cases against senior police officers and government officials with regard to the firing that killing 13 people.
The petition had also demanded a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the issue.
The court's order came as it heard a petition demanding the registration of murder cases against senior police and other government officials for the firing, as well as the setting up of a SIT.
The court asked the government to file its response by next Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the one-man commission appointed by the state government to go into the police firing will begin its probe on Monday.
Retired judge Aruna Jagadessan will reach Thoothukudi on Monday and hold consultations with district officials before meeting the injured at the government hospital.
