Normal life crippled in northern parts of Tamil Nadu including Chennai and its suburbs due to heavy thunder showers that pounded the region in the last 24 hours.

“The rain occurred due to intensification of south west monsoon. This would continue for another two days”, a senior Met official said.

According to him, the DGP office in Chennai and Palipattu in Thiruvallur district received 10 centimetres of rainfall each, while Anna University, airport and Nungambakkam in the city and Kancheepuram district received nine centimetres each in the last 24 hours.

Fishermen were warned not to venture into sea since strong winds from southwesterly direction would reach 55 kmph along Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coast.

Revenue Administration department officials said that hundreds of trees were uprooted in many parts of Chennai and its neighbouring Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram.

The relief and restoration work is being carried out by government and private organisations round-the-clock on a war footing.
