In one of the biggest contraband seizures in recent times, the Navi Mumbai police seized 72.518 kgs of heroin valued at Rs 362.5 crore in the international market, in an intelligence-based operation. It was seized from a container kept in a private yard in Panvel in Raigad district off the old Mumbai-Pune Highway.

The container from Dubai had arrived at the Nhava Sheva port and was headed for Punjab, according to initial investigations carried out by the Navi Mumbai Police.

Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner Bipin Kumar Singh personally oversaw the investigations carried out by Additional Commissioner of Police Mahesh Ghurye and Deputy Commissioner of Police Suresh Mengade. No arrests have been made so far.

Acting on an intelligence input, the Navi Mumbai Crime Branch searched the container and found that the drugs were concealed in door frames.

The seizure was made under the NDPS Act and further investigations are in progress.
