In a major intelligence-based operation, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized 11.94 kgs of heroin valued at Rs 84 crore and apprehended three persons including a woman who smuggled the contraband from Africa.

The DRI-Mumbai carried out the operation based on a specific intelligence that it had received days ago.

The female passenger who arrived from Harare via Nairobi on a Kenya Airways flight on 14 February was apprehended and her luggage was checked.

“Creamish granules recovered from her baggage tested positive for heroin. The passenger informed them that the drugs were handed to her in Harare and were to be handed over to two persons in Mumbai,” DRI officials said.

The two recipients have also been arrested by the officials.

In this instance, the drug was concealed inside trolley bags and file folders.

All three persons have been arrested under provisions of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.

Further investigations are under way to get into the root of the network and bust the syndicate.
