Rahul Gandhi on Friday invoked the spirit of 1977 when the Congress had relied on the tactics of agitation of its youth wing to revive the party which had suffered a humiliating loss after the revocation of Emergency.

Addressing an alumni meet of former Youth Congress presidents here, Rahul asked the Congress workers to learn from the “giants” of the party who had successfully revived the party after the electoral defeats of 1977 and 1989.

The Congress has suffered its worst ever electoral defeat earlier this year having reduced to a meagre 44 seats in Parliament, nearly one-third of what it had won after the Emergency.

Rahul attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for trying to dis-empower the people of the country by mooting changes to UPA’s flagship schemes such as MGREGA and Land Acquisition Act.

“You have to tap the reaction of those who will be affected by the changes to NREGA. You have to fight this battle on the streets. Learn from this experience and hit the streets,” he told the gathering.

Rahul said the Congress will start to revive the day party workers will start the battle the people’s rights.
